Our Ocean
Tamarind Divers are driving a number of initiatives which have a direct impact on Our Ocean. We actively support environmental initiatives both on Nusa Lembongan and Bali. Tamarind Divers were responsible for launching ‘The Last Straw’ campaign in Nusa Lembongan in 2018. We take part in weekly beach clean-ups and we only use re-usable plastics for our lunch boxes and drinking cups. Tamarind Divers is a designated re-fill station for RefillMyBottle, an initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste and minimising impact on the environment. We support the Plastic For Rice Exchange, which aims to prevent plastic waste from entering our ocean, whilst at the same time providing food aid to local people.
Plastic For Rice Exchange
In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity. During the worldwide pandemic in 2020, a local business owner in Bali set up a barter scheme whereby plastic waste could be traded for food.
We were instrumental in extending this initiative to Nusa Lembongan and are actively involved with monthly trash collections and rice distribution.
For more information on the scheme, along with details how you can donate, check out the Plastic Exchange website.
The Last Straw Lembongan
Did you know that over 500 million plastic straws are used and thrown away each day?
That’s a lot of waste clogging our oceans and piling up in landfill. Plastic takes an average of 450 years to start to degrade. At current rates of consumption it’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish.
We believe that we can make a change and do something about it. Tamarind Divers are supporting ‘The Last Straw’ movement which was launched in Australia and we have rolled out the initiative to our island – Nusa Lembongan.
Profits from the sale of our t-shirts go towards The Last Straw Lembongan campaign.

Zero Plastic Lembongan
Zero Plastic Lembongan is an educational initiative to shift people’s mindset around consumption, to encourage reduction in plastic waste, separation and recycle through information campaigns.
We are an active member of Zero Plastic Lembongan and take part in regular island & beach clean-ups. Check out the Facebook page for latest news & events.
An important element to achieving zero plastic waste on our island has been the introduction of recycling facilities. Lembongan Recycling are managing waste collected on the island and latest activities can be viewed via their Facebook page.
Refill My Botttle
In order to reduce the amount of plastic bottles being used on Nusa Lembongan, we have teamed up with RefillMyBottle, who are a network of water refill stations in the Bali region.
The Balinese people traditionally used only organic materials leaving no waste behind. With the introduction of plastics, rapid growth and globalization left no time to teach sustainable ways of handling plastic waste to locals. As a result, non-biodegradable waste is now covering Bali and polluting rivers, oceans and being burned on daily basis.
We offer FREE water refills to our guests, or any thirsty passer-by who would like to reduce plastic waste and protect our natural resources!
